OUR STORY

A Legacy Realized

Itinerant preacher Rev. Elliot Thaddeus Moore felt profoundly moved when he inherited a sweeping plot of land along a winding bend of the Cumberland River in 1885. Envisioning a place for spiritual and intellectual transformation, Rev. Moore established Cumberland Seminary in 1893 upon that scenic 325 acre plot.

The humble seminary soon welcomed professors and students exploring history, philosophy, natural sciences and poetry beyond divinity. In 1904, Moore celebrated the broadening academic horizons upon their Rocky Cumberland foothold, and Cumberland Seminary became Rockland University.

Rockland University proudly carries forward Rev. Moore’s commitment to nurturing human acumen, ethics and purpose which coalesced during his years spreading faith from pulpit to pulpit across Tennessee.

A Campus Beyond Compare

Rockland’s 625-acre landscape inspires community and exploration in equal measure. On crisp autumn Saturdays, classmates bond over football games at raucous Rhine Stadium while debaters trade barbs at the outdoor amphitheater.

When spring comes to campus, ultimate frisbee players take advantage of expansive lawns on North Quad and students picnic under the April blooms of our arboretum’s 600 cherry trees. The intrepid test cliff-faces on our new bouldering wall or glide through wooded trails on bike rentals from the rec center.

Whether lounging with pals on South Lawn or developing photographic perspectives of campus sights, Rockland cultivates connectedness through our inspiring surroundings.
