A Legacy Realized
Itinerant preacher Rev. Elliot Thaddeus Moore felt profoundly moved when he inherited a sweeping plot of land along a winding bend of the Cumberland River in 1885. Envisioning a place for spiritual and intellectual transformation, Rev. Moore established Cumberland Seminary in 1893 upon that scenic 325 acre plot.
The humble seminary soon welcomed professors and students exploring history, philosophy, natural sciences and poetry beyond divinity. In 1904, Moore celebrated the broadening academic horizons upon their Rocky Cumberland foothold, and Cumberland Seminary became Rockland University.
Rockland University proudly carries forward Rev. Moore’s commitment to nurturing human acumen, ethics and purpose which coalesced during his years spreading faith from pulpit to pulpit across Tennessee.
